I wanted to give my girls something each year that would be special.  I started each one a collection, Kayla, nutcrackers and Candace, snow globes.  Each year I give them a new one.  Kayla now has 18 and we decided that was enough and now we are going to start giving her a decoration each year.  The plan is when they start their own home they will take their collection and decorations with them and have something to get them started.

Kayla’s nutcrackers are displayed over my kitchen cabinets.  It is the perfect place to display so many!

It is also that time to decorate the tree.  We each have a job.  Keith makes a million and one trips to the basement.  Kayla puts up her nutcrackers.  Candace and I put out the nativity scene.  My least favorite job is to make all the limbs of the tree look “real” and there to not be any holes when you look at it.  It takes FOREVER!  Keith and Kayla put of the lights (Keith must borrow neighbor, Steve’s, ladder each year) and the angel tree topper that has basically lost her lights and her wings are not so pretty.  Then we all decorate the tree together.  We have a great time.  It does not take to long and we are all happy to see Keith headed back down to the basement with the empty boxes.

My parents are coming tomorrow for Thanksgiving.  Kayla is coming home tomorrow night (I cannot wait to love on my sweet girl.  We are glad she likes school, but we miss her BAAAADDDD!)  My sister, Susan, will be coming around the mountain on Wednesday.  (she lives in Asheville, North Carolina)   I have made her two batches of Chocolate Chip Cookie dough and frozen it so we can have hot cookies while she is here!  Sue and I love to snuggle up, watch movies, and eat cookies!!  WE ARE SO EXCITED TO HAVE EVERYONE!

Keith has been so wonderful helping me get the house ready. Physically I just have not had the energy and he has really done all the little things he knows means a lot to me.

My brother, Jim,  lives in Swaunee, Georgia.  He is taking over the turkey cooking.  He is an amazing cook!  Melinda, his wife, is making squash casserole.  (She is a southern cook! woohoo)  My mother-in-law, Carolyn, is making her yummy sweet potatoes with brown sugar, butter, and pecan topping; her scrumptious pumpkin gooey dessert,  and fresh green beans.  My mom is making the dressing and pecan pies.  Susan, my sister, is making the gravy.  You know what that leaves for me to do?   You guessed it, NOTHING!!  Well, I may have a few suggestions to make along the way.  (I have been accused more than once of being bossy in the kitchen)

I am planning on taking it easy and enjoying the family.   I am making my daddy chicken pot pie, apple pie and Jamaican Pumpkin Soup (all his favorites) for his arrival!   Knowing they are all coming makes the aches and pains not quite so painful!  It is so exciting !!!

9 minutes

Today i got home nine minutes before Candace got off the bus.  Homework is a little stressful sometimes so I really like to enjoy my time and get myself geared up for the HW time.  Today the weather was perfect so I sat on my back deck and enjoyed the leaves.  Half the trees are bare and the other half seem to be holding on for dear life.  When the wind would blow a single leaf would start to float and fall to the ground.  Sitting on the back deck relaxes me and makes remember God’s beauty.

We have a chipmunk that you can hear chirping.  There may be a family but no one has ever seen more than one at a time so we assume he is a lone ranger.

Homework today was not that bad.  Candace said she would wait and do the math with her dad so she would not stress me out.  The nerve of her.  Stress me out!  Well, she may have a point and I think I will let her dad have the honors!

Now if I can muster the energy, I am going to make my hero, Keith, some of the good looking nuts my friend, Robin, talked about.  He loves pecans and I think he deserves something sweet. (he will be doing the math:))

Boy what a great weekend.  I am tired but that is not a complaint, just a fact of a very fun filled busy weekend!!  Kayla came home and we went shopping with Candace on Saturday.  I was not excited about shopping for me but I really needed some clothes.  Kayla was great in helping me find things that she approved of and that did not make me look really really old!  🙂

We then went to our Blog Party and had a great time with my BFF Rob.   I loved meeting everyone and having time with Kayla and Robin. I love that Kayla is an adult and we can share adult things together!

Today we went to Kayla’s church.   It was a great sermon on encouraging others and how our words can change someones life for the good or bad.  He majored on the good and how affirming others is food to their soul.

After church we got a burger and then helped Kayla pack up and leave to go back to school.  I should be used to it, but no, I always feel like part of me just left.  We love having her but love that she is ready to go back.

Candace got upset earlier in the week because Kayla said to her she was on her way home, she meant her dorm room.  Candace said can you believe she said that is her home.  Candace said it just made me want to cry.   It was really sweet and I think very sensitive of her.  I am proud and truthfully a little sad that Kayla is gaining her independence and feeling like an individual.  She is an amazing young woman.  She is sensitive to us, respectful of our opinion but forging on to become this exciting person that is slowly evolving as she tries different things and risk change.

I then went and worked out with my boss.  I almost threw up.  We did a workout called the Dirty Thirty.  We did thirty of each of these exercises:  jumping pull-ups, kettlebell swings, knee-ups, lunges, 60 jump ropes, 30 burpees (I could only do the push-up part, I was seeing stars as it was) and  back extensions.  It was grueling and it shows how out of shape I am. BUT I DID IT, that is what counts!  Tomorrow I am doing cardio and shoulders.

I then went and bought groceries, made an easy dinner, bathed and am now watching Iron Chef America and blogging.  I am ready for a great night sleep!

I AM CANDY

Kayla and Candace

Kayla and Candace

When we were picking out names for our children we looked at every aspect of their name. Did it rhythm with a bad word, could kids make it into a song and make fun of our child. We thought of the nicknames that could be derived from the name.

With our first child we knew that if we had a girl we wanted to name her Kayla. We had gone to college with a Kayla. She was beautiful, confident and just made you smile. So when we found out we were having a girl we immediately started calling her Kayla. Middle name was a little more difficult, but not really. We wanted to name our daughter after my mother. My mom’s name is Johnnie Belle Sapp Lord. Truly there was only one name we would consider out of those four names and Belle just seemed to go good with Kayla. So on November 16, 1989 we gave birth to Kayla Belle Ingram. She was a beautiful baby and she looked like she fit the name perfectly. The only problem with the middle name was sometimes kids would say, “ding dong, ring a ling” but nothing that really was so bad. She never got a nickname from either of her names and I think that bothered her when she was younger. When her sister came along it seemed nature to speak about her as “Sissy”. It stuck and in our home she is Sissy. We all love it, it feels natural and she now has a nickname at home.

Eight years later we were pregnant with our second daughter and now there were three of us deciding on a name. Adding Kayla to the mix made it much more difficult but we wanted her to take part in the decision. We would come up with a name and Kayla would say, “no way, there is a girl in my class with that name and she is not nice”. She came up with some really great names, Savannah Rose is the one she was pulling for the most. Keith said absolutely not and I agreed. The other problem we had was that half the names we came up with Keith had at some point dated a girl with that name. It got kind of humorous because we had to run it through those two filter first.

We all came to agree when we thought of the name Candace. I was a little nervous because I did not want my daughter called Candy but friends assured me that whatever we called our daughter others would follow, so baby girl 2 became Candace. The middle name was pretty easy. My sister’s middle name is Elizabeth, a name that I love, but more importantly, my sister is one of my best friends and had been with me through so many things, I wanted to honor her. So we all agreed on Candace Elizabeth Ingram.

Candace, ada Candy

Candace, ada Candy

Candace has been Candace for 10 years. In fourth grade Candace came home and said that some of the kids were calling her Candy and she liked it. She always giggles and said that her teacher even slipped and called her Candy one time. I let it go and sometimes Kayla and I would call her that but really did not think anything of it.

Candace has now gone to a new school and she has told the children they can call her Candy, AND THEY DO! She wants to be called Candy. I have a problem with that. We named her Candace and I like that name BUT if you know Candace if anyone could pull off the name Candy it would be her. She is such a funny child, who can make you cry from laughing so hard. She is sweet, sassy and has a great sense of humor. We made her a blog this week and the name of it is I AM CANDY!

When I am upset with her I do the whole name thing, CANDACE ELIZABETH INGRAM! Yelling CANDY would just not be the same.

Here are my questions, Do I let her be Candy? Do I call her Candy? I want her to have a sense of self and want her to have confidence, if Candy does that for her, who am I to stand in the way? TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK PLEASE.

It is so embarrassing to tell this story. I am a little more responsible than I was 10 years ago and I am proud I have grown. I do have a bad habit of keeping things longer than I am supposed to, (library books, videos, DVDs etc.) So I have paid many a late fee over the course of my 27 years of marriage and 46 years of living.
When Kayla was small I used to take her to the public library. We had late books but I guess at some point we had books that were never found. I had a fine of 50 something dollars on each account and we could not afford to pay it. Kayla was between 3-5. So we just quit going to the library. One time when she was in elementary school we went to try to check out books and had a huge fine and we could not pay it or check out the books. I have never gone back. I have always felt guilty about the fact I owed money and that I could not take my kids to the library.
Candace came home yesterday and had not checked out a book for reading and the idea popped up in my head, “Lets go to the PUBLIC LIBRARY”. She was thrilled. It is only two miles from our house. I decided I would pay whatever fines we had so we had a clean slate and could be upstanding citizens and check out library books again. Candace is 10 and I have never taken her to the library. There I said it, the shame is great for me and I was determined to live through the shame in front of the librarian.
We went, found three great books for her and then went to check out. I told the librarian we had not been in years, gave her my driver’s license and held my breathe. She look for a while and said she did not have us on file. (That means ZERO fines, clean slate) We both got cards we both checked out books with our new library cards!

I think there are many things in life that we anticipate as terrible and then we go and they are minor or nothing at all. I have had a clean bill with the Cherokee County Library for I don’t know how long and was feeling guilty for years. What a waste. The greatest shame is I did not feel comfortable in taking my kids to the library because of something that was not even there. I am wondering what other things I am putting off, what smoke screens are keeping me stuck? I am going to explore and see about blowing the smoke away. I am going to have courage to step out and see what happens. I will let you know what I find.

The real Kayla Belle and sweet Joseph 🙂

Saint Kayla came home this weekend and helped us with Candace and all her make-up homework. As Candy said, Mom is not great at the math, I NEEEEEED Kayla. Well, what a blessing. They did almost all of the math homework for an entire week. I get completely overwhelmed when we just have regular homework, but to have a weeks worth blew my mind! I did not ask Kayla to come home but I believe she could sense my despair and was kind and precious and came home to help.

Thank you Lord for my Kayla Belle. It was great to have Joseph around. I miss getting to see him with Kayla not here as much!
